“Weird Al” Yankovic is anything but ordinary. The 63-year-old is an extraordinary comedic genius who has become the world’s greatest parody songwriter and musician. For someone who has made a career out of parody, it makes sense that the film documenting his life story Strange: The Al Yankovic Storyis a parody of the standard biopic.
Directed by Eric Appel Strange is a satirical film loosely based on the life and work of Yankovic. Daniel Radcliffe plays Yankovic, the up-and-coming comedy musician who rises to superstardom with early hits My Bolognese, I love Rocky Roadand Another rides the bus. Strange combines some accurate moments from Yankovic’s life with over-the-top fictional storylines to fuel the “sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll” themes of previous biographical films.
“People think they know who Weird Al Yankovic is, but after seeing this movie they’ll realize they had absolutely no idea,” Appel said in a behind-the-scenes interview.
Strange The cast includes several well-known personalities and artists who have crossed paths with the comedic musician. Madonna (Evan Rachel Wood), Dr. Demento (Rainn Wilson), Pablo Escobar (Arturo Castro) and Oprah Winfrey (Quinta Brunson) are some of the notable artists to appear throughout the film. Madonna is particularly starring due to her dramatic love affair with Yankovic and the fact that her hit song plays a major role in the film Like a Virgin inspired by Yankovic Like a surgeon.
“There are of course ups and downs along the way, including a torrid and tumultuous love affair with Madonna,” Radcliffe said. “And, as we all know, he’s rising to become the most popular musician in the history of the earth.”
The idea for this biopic, co-written by Appel and Yankovic, came about in 2010 when Appel created a fake trailer for a film based on Yankovic’s life for Funny or die. Since the film premiered at TIFF2022, Strange was praised for its satirical nature, humor, and Radcliffe’s performance. In true Weird Al fashion, he seems happy with the end result and recommends that everyone should have a biopic of their own lives.
“It’s a weird process putting your life on screen, but um, I recommend it,” Yankovic said. “If someone comes up to you and offers to do some kind of biopic, I say go for it. let her do it It is a unique experience that everyone should have at least once.”
