File these under “Headlines I Never Thought I’d Write” folks.
Wizards of the Coast, creators of Dungeons & Dragons, have celebrated their recent release of Spelljammer, a sci-fi inspired setting for D&D, by sending one of the game’s iconic twenty-sided dice into outer space. In a moment you could neither predict nor fake, the dice rolls with sides 20 and 1 pointing towards the camera at key moments in the video.
Safely housed in a plastic bubble on the deck of a (scale model) Star Moth magic jammer on a balloon, a two-hour video shows the cube’s journey past the clouds to a spot where the curvature of the earth is evident. It’s all set to the beats of the album Spelljams, which Wizards made for their release, is a synth-heavy journey through fantasy space.
The video, titled “Launching a Dice to Space” to everyone’s chagrin because YouTube doesn’t let you say the actual singular (die) or their algorithm hates you, was posted by Wizards on their channel over there. (opens in new tab)
As if by a miracle, the dice jerks shortly after being released in such a way that the 20, the critical hit, the great success, points in the direction of the camera. It’s not technically face-rolling… but it sure feels like it.
Later in the video, as the vehicle nears its highest altitude, it turns around again and shows viewers the 1…then all hell breaks loose. Strong winds twist the thing in all directions, causing the craft to be yanked out of frame and thrown into the distance.
It’s a wild ride. I’d suggest checking out the start and finish segments, but be sure to stop at around 30-40 minutes to see some really nice fluffy clouds across the rich blue desert sky.
