How to save all characters in The Devil in Me
If you’ve played The Dark Pictures or similar games before, you know by now that some choices are more important than others. While some create the illusion of possible death, others can deliver truly fatal blows to your playable characters. As such, this guide will focus on the big branching moments, where life and death are at stake.
Naturally, This guide contains many spoilers, but I guess you knew that before you landed here. The steps below are listed in the order they appear in your game and I will list both the location/chapter name and the playable character for each crucial moment. There are 12 main scenes that will decide the fate of the Five individually, but some scenes contain multiple pass-and-fail scenarios, so follow closely.
Blackout – Erin
The first chance for someone to die is when Erin is alone in the dark room and is offered her inhaler by the killer. Take the inhaler and don’t attack the killer Survive.
Silver Ash Institute – Erin
In the weird institute wing of the complex, playing as Erin again, Do not use your inhaler and later, hide in the closet if you have the chance
Ignition – Charlie
Charlie’s first chance to die is when he’s locked in an incinerator. You need to Open the grate on the floor and crawl under it. It takes two tries, so don’t give up or hesitate. It will also look like he’s dead when the game switches to curator for more brooding narration, but he’ll have survived – don’t worry.
Breathless – Jamie
If you have to kill Kate or Erin, Choose Kate. The reason is that Kate will indeed survive, but Erin will not. Trust the process once again!
Waste Disposal – Charlie
As Charlie, this scene is more about QTEs than traditional decision making. be sure to pass each QTE as well as Breathe mini gameand if you do it right, charlie lives to smoke another day.
Director’s Suite – Kate and Jamie
Here you play as both Kate and Jamie for a bit, and there are actually a few ways to get out of it alive. The easiest way is Run instead of hide If prompted, select this Close the moving wall close immediately, resulting in you having to pass a QTE right after.
When both characters are in the glass room where one person seems doomed to be crushed, Make sure the wall moves to crush whoever has the screwdriver. In my playthrough, I did this by having Jamie volunteer for a hero’s death and refusing to turn the wall on Kate’s side. As with Charlie in the incinerator, the game aborts and makes you think she died, but when you return you’ll find that Jamie used the screwdriver brilliantly to pierce and shatter the glass wall.
If you have to run to save yourself or save Jamie who was grabbed by the killer, decide to save her.
Maze – Kate
Once you get into the barn with the killer on your heels, go for it barricade the doorsthen choose to run instead of going upstairs.
Cliffside – Charlie
In a disgusting slaughterhouse area you have to Complete the Breathing mini-game as Charlie once more. If you do that later balance minigame Make sure you succeed after Mark does it.
Homestead – Jamie
You can’t play as Connie the dog, but here you save her. If you have to hide in the big white house Choose the fearful answer. Kate will hide behind a sofa and bring Connie to life. There is another version of this scene where Connie lives but Jamie doesn’t, so choose that one!
Lighthouse – mark
as Mark, ignore Erin’s requests to tie up Charlie. She mistakenly believes he is involved in the killing spree because the killer staged a scenario that would have her believe that. But it’s not true, and tying up Charlie will only kill him.
Lake – Erin
As Erin, say it Highlight to grab the gun when the cop, uh, “drops” it. It won’t work, but he’ll grab some kind of spray as a consolation prize. Things get critical later on the escape boat. Survive this final sequence with the killer and you will see the sunrise in The Devil in Me.
