Warning: This article contains major spoilers for 65 (2023).
65s story is pretty simple. Set “before the advent of mankind,” the sci-fi film follows Mills (Adam Driver), a hired pilot from a far-off world who is stranded on an uncharted planet after his ship is hit by an unexpected asteroid storm. With all of its cryogenically sleeping passengers presumed dead, Mills briefly considers killing himself 65‘s first few minutes before discovering that one of his passengers, a little girl named Koa (Ariana Greenblatt), survived her crash.

What is “65” about?
After waking Koa up, Mills takes it upon himself to travel with her to her ship’s escape ship, which crashed on a distant mountain over a dozen kilometers away. Unfortunately for Mills and Koa, viewers quickly discover that they didn’t crash on just any planet, but on a prehistoric earth still populated by dinosaurs. As a result, the duo’s escape from Earth isn’t nearly as easy as they would have liked.
Over the period of 65In the meager 93-minute running time, Mills and Koa must face off against an array of dinosaurs, many of whom immediately attempt to kill the pair. If that wasn’t bad enough, it will be revealed 65‘s second act that the asteroid field that brought down Mills and Koa’s ship was just the leftover debris of another, much larger asteroid heading straight for Earth. The asteroid in question is the same one that will wipe out all of the planet’s non-bird dinosaurs.
Adam Driver is really fighting a Tyrannosaurus Rex in 65?
After discovering the approaching asteroid, Mills and Koa rush to get to their escape ship before the Earth’s surface is completely reshaped. However, when they reach their escape ship, Koa realizes not only that both of her parents were killed in the crash that brought her to Earth in the first place, but that Mills lied to her that her family was at the destination. For a few moments, Koa and Mills seem irrevocably separated by the grief and sense of betrayal.
Instead, Mills tells her about the loss of his own daughter, Nevine (Chloe Coleman), who died while he was away on the very mission that brought him and Koa together. Although Koa cannot fully understand him, he recognizes Mills’ vulnerability. It is consequently the shared grief of the two that brings them back together. Unfortunately, just as Koa and Mills are about to leave Earth, their getaway ship is hit by a meteor, knocking it off its mountain pole.
On the ground, Mills and Koa find themselves surrounded by three very angry Tyrannosaurus Rexes. Mills disembarks from her escape ship and manages to defeat two of the giant dinosaurs alone. However, once his only weapon runs out of ammo, it’s only a well-timed geyser explosion and a last-minute rescue from Koa that prevents the remaining T-Rex from killing Mills. With only seconds left, Mills and Koa then race back to their escape ship, leaving Earth just as it is hit by a planet-changing asteroid.
How does 65 end?

As he and Koa fly toward the rescue ship that awaits them somewhere in the stars, Mills closes his eyes and recalls some of his final memories with his daughter. For a moment it looks as if the pilot will give in to the pain of his multiple wounds and die. However, he is brought back to consciousness when Koa takes his hand in hers. 65 then ends with an image of Mills and Koa’s ship speeding away, becoming another speck of light in a sea of stars.
As for the ends 65‘s is ultimately a reflection of the film itself. It’s a simple, sober ending that plays with many familiar ideas and story beats, yet achieves an emotional resolution that’s moving in its own little way and surprisingly upbeat. As exciting as many of 65Mills and Koa’s action sequences are what keep them alive. Only then does it fit 65 ends with an image that emphasizes connectedness and loneliness in equal measure.
65 is in cinemas now.
