Art fans and lovers of Japanese culture can find themselves with a new LEGO set this New Year’s Day. The company announced today that it will be releasing a LEGO Art Kit based on the classic woodblock print The Great Wave off Kanagawa on January 1, 2023.
The 1,810-piece set includes layers and elements of various shapes to build Katsushika Hokusai’s reimagined work. LEGO intends the set to allow builders to relax and find their inner flow. To achieve this goal, the company adds a soundtrack with soothing music to the art set.
created Hokusai The Great Wave off Kanagawa in 1831, and the art shows Mount Fuji in the background with the massive ominous sea waves in the foreground. Three boats appear in the play, each with eight oarsmen holding oars. The work has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Japanese art and culture, and is possibly the most reproduced work of art in the country’s history.
Commenting on the new art set, LEGO Group designer Annemette Baaskjær Nielsen said: “We are delighted that fans of art and Japanese culture have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the relaxing project of recreating the iconic Big wave, captured in a LEGO Art set.” She continued, “This set offers so many ways for fans to relax and find their flow. Not only immerse yourself in the construction process, but also immerse yourself in the artwork and its composition. Spark interest in Hokusai’s instantly recognizable original and rich history of nearly 200 years.”
LEGO Art Hokusai: The Great Wave will be available January 1, 2023 on the LEGO website and LEGO retailers for $99.99.
