The new picture of TV show The Last of Us teases Joel and Ellie in action

We finally got a better look at HBO’s highly anticipated TV series The Last of Us.

Speaking at Summer Game Fest 2022, series co-creator and executive producer Neil Druckmann shared a new image starring Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian) and Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones) in action as lead characters Joel and Ellie.

The photo is only the second official image of The Last of Us television series to be released so far, after HBO released a slightly less revealing teaser for the series in September last year.

Based on Naughty Dog’s acclaimed video game series of the same name, The Last of Us TV show will chronicle the journey of wanderers Joel and Ellie as they try to survive in a post-apocalyptic America overrun by zombie-like infected.

Judging by official information and images shared so far, the HBO Max series will mirror the plot of the first The Last of Us game – which came out on PS3 back in 2013 – although Druckmann has confirmed that some episodes “will deviate greatly.” ‘ from the source material, in reference to their focus on drama rather than hardcore action.

However, we do know that actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson – who voiced Joel and Ellie in the original Naughty Dog game – will appear in the TV show The Last of Us. The couple took the stage at Summer Game Fest 2022 to confirm their involvement, but didn’t shed any light on the characters they will be playing.

It is still unclear when the TV show The Last of Us will be released. Early reports suggested the series could be out later this year (star Bella Ramsey even took to Instagram in January to announce a 2022 date), though HBO’s chief content officer Casey Bloys recently announced that she won’t hit screens until 2023 at the earliest.

According to that Directors Guild of Canada (opens in new tab)Principal filming for TV show The Last of Us is set to wrap up in June – so there’s a chance we’ll be treated to at least a teaser trailer in the coming months.

A peek behind the curtain

As mentioned, the latest image from The Last of Us TV show is only the second official look at the HBO Max series to be released to the public so far – but there are plenty more behind-the-scenes photos in the wild .

Given the popularity of the Naughty Dog video game franchise, it’s no wonder that fans have created a slew of social media accounts dedicated to sharing news and rumors surrounding the show, and many of these forums regularly post pictures of Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey costume as Joel and Ellie.

Luckily, The Last of Us TV show looks like it’ll be staying largely true to its epoch-making source material, and with a reported series budget in excess of $155 million, we’re excited to see how HBO plans to bring the harrowing story of Joel and Ellie to life — even if we have to wait until 2023.
