You might have thought that almost every aspect of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S23 phones would have been leaked by this point, but that’s not the case – the rumor mill keeps pouring out more information about these flagship devices ahead of their launch on February 1st.
Today we received another tidbit of information from well-known leak providers ice universe (opens in new tab) (about GSMArena (opens in new tab)) who visited Chinese social media platform Weibo to share some details about the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s portrait video mode.
The source says the mode will be able to record in a 4K resolution at 30 frames per second, with the phone offering relatively good heat control so the processing power required to capture clips in this mode won’t overheat the phone.

We weren’t very impressed with the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s portrait video mode, especially when compared to the iPhone’s cinematic mode. Either way, the subject of a video stays in focus while the background blurs.
The current Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra can record normal videos in 8K resolution at 24 frames per second or in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. In portrait format, this goes up to a resolution of 1080p at 30 frames per second.
It is unclear whether the other two Galaxy S23 models will get the portrait mode or not this time. All will be revealed when Samsung’s next Unpacked launch event is due, and it’s only a few weeks away.
Analysis: a story of two sensors
Based on the rumors we’ve heard so far, we expect the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra to come with the new 200MP ISOCELL HP2 sensor that Samsung has unveiled. The Standard and Plus models are rumored to be sticking with a 50-megapixel main sensor.
That should mean the Ultra model is the one to offer the most extensive camera upgrades over last year’s models. So far we’ve heard the night vision abilities will be better, and we’ve seen sample shots for comparison purposes.
There has also been talk of Samsung adding more modes on the software side to go along with improvements in hardware. From a photo and video perspective, you should be able to do more than ever with the upcoming Galaxy S23 phones.
In fact, it’s been talked about so much that we think the Galaxy S23 Ultra could be one of the best camera phones of the year – and it could even offer more than what Apple plans to do with the iPhone 15’s cameras.
