A futuristic cabin design that looks like a home away from home has just won an award for excellence in aircraft interior innovation.
At a special ceremony in Hamburg, Germany Tuesday night, the Crystal Cabin Award for Best Cabin Concept went to Teague and NORDAM for their “Elevate” design. Check out the winning entry in the image gallery:

A panel of industry experts selected the entry from Washington-based design firm Teague and Oklahoma-based NORDAM over other finalists, whose efforts can be seen in the video below:
Competition organizers described Elevate as a “visually compelling design [that] uses floating furniture attached to wall braces to provide a freer, more organic and immersive feel than comparable premium single-aisle aircraft accommodation concepts.”
Other notable features include a lightweight design to reduce fuel consumption and the use of simpler components allowing for easier maintenance.
The design was aimed at giving premium passengers a feeling of spaciousness without forcing airlines to reduce the number of seats.
Teague and NORDAM noted how today’s cabin designs are hampered by the need to use furniture attachment points found only in the seat tracks.
“Elevate is the first cabin in history to implement attachment points on the sidewalls that allow for the creation of a lighter and more efficient suite environment,” said the winners. “By utilizing sidewall baffles that eliminate restrictive structures around the monitor, side furniture and ottoman, the Elevate concept increases bed size, living space and stowage capacity for each passenger – providing greater floor space and promoting an expansive living space.”
Anthony Harcup, Teague’s Senior Director of Airline Experience, said the winning design “represents a new generation of beautiful, simplified cabin products that will enable airlines to offer their passengers exceptional experiences with the economic efficiencies they are designing for smaller aircraft became”. while NORDAM CEO Meredith Siegfried Madden described Elevate as “a next-generation innovation that allows more creative freedom for the aircraft interior design community”.
Whether airlines will adopt ideas from Elevate remains to be seen, but the design will certainly appeal to people who can afford the pricier airplane seats. It’s certainly more attractive than those “bicycle saddle” seats that appeared in an Airbus patent a few years ago.
The Crystal Cabin Award was established in 2007 with the aim of initiating meaningful improvements in passenger comfort. Other awards were given for the best innovations in areas such as cabin systems, health and safety, and sustainable cabin design.
