TikTok has steadily grown in users over the years and now, according to the company, they have finally passed the 1 billion mark where they say their platform is now home to 1 billion monthly users worldwide.
This is actually pretty crazy and if you think about it it almost didn’t happen. This is because the U.S. government announced in 2020 that it would force ByteDance (TikTok’s parent company, based in China) to sell TikTok to a U.S. company so they wouldn’t be banned, but it didn’t.
We imagine that if this happened, TikTok would have easily lost a lot of users and if they were banned they would not have access to the US market, which, according to the company, is one of the largest markets alongside India and Brazil. Other platforms such as Instagram have now cracked the 1 billion mark of active users and have launched their own competitor to TikTok, Reels.
That being said, TikTok is still a long way from overtaking Facebook. Based on the latest figures, Facebook has nearly 3 billion monthly active users, so it may take a while for TikTok to overtake them if they ever do.
