More than a year after the PlayStation 5 launched, it’s still a very hard-to-find console. With the ongoing semiconductor shortages affecting consumer electronics manufacturers around the world, finding a PS5 is unlikely to get any easier in the short term. We’re not going to lie: it will be difficult to get a PS5 this holiday season, but these tips could give you an edge if you can find one.
Don’t forget about Google News
There’s a lot of clickbait on PS5 top ups out there, with headlines seemingly promising information about upcoming top ups coupled with articles that ultimately say nothing at all. Landing on any of these articles can be annoying, but you can avoid many of them by regularly checking the technology section of Google News.
I’ve noticed that Google News has become a great way to find out about inbound stock declines for both the PS5 and Xbox Series X, at least in the last few months. Obviously, Google News isn’t very handy when it comes to unannounced stocks going down, but if a retailer announces in advance that they are announcing an upcoming replenishment of the PS5, there’s a good chance you can read about it there. If nothing else, better to check Google News a few times during the day than following a number of retailers on Twitter and trying to keep up with all of their announcements.
Turn on a Twitch stream in the background
While this tip is a bit strange at first, it can potentially save you a lot of time. There is at least one Twitch live stream that tracks the PS5 and Xbox Series X replenishments at various retailers and notifies viewers when new stocks are discovered. The only stream I’ve found that does this is KillerCam1020, but also those of you looking for new PC hardware can check it out Falcodrinrunning a very similar Twitch tracker for GPU stocks.
Following KillerCam1020 and having the stream running in the background whenever you’re at your computer is a handy way to keep track of PS5 replenishments at a pretty wide range of retailers including Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, Ant Online, Sam’s Club and PlayStation Direct. The alert the stream plays when new PS5 stocks are detected is appropriately loud and annoying so you won’t miss it, and the stream is otherwise silent so you can focus on whatever else you’re doing while it’s playing running in the background.
KillerCam1020 is a great way to improve your chances of getting a PS5 without doing a lot of legwork yourself. There are some drawbacks to this method, however. First of all, the stream must actually be open before you can receive notifications of new PS5 stocks. Second, the stream only tracks US stocks, so this tip doesn’t really do much for our EU brothers and sisters trying to get a PS5 for themselves.
Join the StockDrops Discord
Following StockDrops is probably the best tip I can give because it has actually worked for me in the past. These days StockDrops has an app that you can download, but joining the Discord also works (links to both can be found on the StockDrops website). When you join the Discord server, you can sign up for notifications for all kinds of hard-to-find hardware, be it PS5, Xbox Series X, or any number of GPUs from NVIDIA and AMD.
When you join and log in to receive notifications of new PS5 stocks, you will only be pinged when new stocks are available, while all other notifications will remain silent. By joining the StockDrops Discord, I managed to snap up the RTX 3070 sitting in the machine I’m using to write this article.
Again, there are some downsides (because no method is perfect). Just joining the Discord will have to be ready to act when that notification comes through, and although StockDrops says the desktop app provides the fastest notifications, I have no experience with it. StockDrops has a sizable following too – there are thousands and thousands of people on this server – so you may still be competing with many others for your PS5.
