The Immortal Empires Mega Campaign for Total War: Warhammer 3 was long-awaited thanks to the popularity of its predecessor, the Mortal Empires campaign for Total War: Warhammer 2, and Warhammer 3’s default Realm of Chaos campaign, which in the second slightly Play through was disappointing. Since Immortal Empires was released as a beta, Warhammer 3 player count on Steam has skyrocketed like a doom diver.
Warhammer 3 Maximum number of simultaneous players (opens in new tab) on Steam was 166,754 when it launched on February 17th. That went down quickly and has fluctuated between 8,000 and 12,000 players over the past three months. It surged again with the Immortal Empires beta release on August 23, reaching 119,166 on the day. It has remained high ever since, hitting 103,952 today, which puts it at number 11 Steam’s list of top games by current player count (opens in new tab) just behind Rust.
It probably helps that there is one Steam sale of the series (opens in new tab) currently with the the first two Total Wars Warhammers in one bundle at 75% off (opens in new tab). (You need all three base games to play Immortal Empires.)
Our own Fraser Brown got into beta early and played a campaign and concluded: “It should be too big and too unwieldy, and it’s certainly very messy and difficult to understand – there needs to be a limit on the number of uniques.” give faction mechanics for the human brain to juggle – but it’s all just brilliant.” Sean Martin also played Immortal Empires and managed to break up the campaign with a Black Ark superfleet, although he certainly enjoyed it.
With 278 factions and 86 playable Legendary Lords to choose from, I suspect it will be a while before players tire of Immortal Empires. It adds the Realm of Chaos campaign villain Be’Lakor as a playable lord with his own faction, and gives dedicated factions to the existing lords Grombrindal, Helman Ghorst, Volkmar the Grim, Sigvald the Magnificent, and Kholek Suneater. Sea routes, which allow you to move armies between distant lands, are another addition, as are random end-game apocalypses that present you with an extra challenge once you reach the point where victory seems inevitable. If you feel like it, you can even turn them all on at once in Ultimate Crisis Mode.
