Almost everyone is feeling the effects of the cost of living crisis, and it turns out that PC vendors are no exception if Gartner’s new analysis is to be believed.
The analyst firm forecasts that global PC shipments will fall 9.5% to 310 million in 2022. Although consumer demand is likely to fall at a much faster rate, demand for business computers and business laptops will also decline by 9.5% year over year.
The EMEA region is expected to see a record drop in demand for consumer PCs throughout 2022, which Gartner attributes to factors such as the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on exchange rates.
Is it just PC sales that are declining?
Although PC sales will be the hardest hit of all technology segments, the analyst firm says the mobile and tablet segments will also decline significantly.
Gartner forecasts that tablet sales will fall 9.0% to 142 million in 2022 after rising 5.0% in 2021. Mobile phone sales are not going to fare much better as they are expected to decline 7.1% in 2022 after growing 5.0% in 2021.

One area of the electronics market that is expected to grow is 5G phones. In 2022, Gartner expects global 5G phone shipments to total 710 million units.
Although this is a downgrade from Gartner’s earlier expectations, demand for 5G phones is expected to pick up faster in 2023.
“A perfect storm of geopolitical upheaval, high inflation, currency volatility and supply chain disruptions has sapped business and consumer demand for devices around the world and will hit the PC market the hardest in 2022,” said Ranjit Atwal, Senior Analyst at Gartner.
