Despite being one of the most popular social media platforms and microblogging sites for over a decade, Twitter has long struggled to be profitable. recently with the ongoing fiasco surrounding Elon Musk’s takeover bidTwitter Revenue seems to be falling. This is another reason why the company’s share price has fallen significantly.
To counteract this, Twitter is looking for new and sustainable sources of income. One of the avenues the social media platform is exploring is online shopping. Twitter is testing a new feature called Product Drops, which will provide previews of upcoming product releases from various retailers.
The new feature allows brands to tease items before they go on sale, and users can opt-in to be reminded through in-app notifications before they’re released. The idea is to eventually have a marketplace on Twitter, just like Instagram. As of now, however, the feature is limited to setting reminders only.
“At Product Drops, when a retailer tweets about an upcoming launch, you see a ‘remind me’ button at the bottom of the tweet,” the company said in a blog post.
With a tap, users can request to be reminded of the drop.
Instagram’s sales and profitability skyrocketed as they launched their shopping program and allowed brands to include direct buy links in their posts.
On launch day, users will receive an in-app notification in their Notifications tab 15 minutes before and at the time of release, allowing them to be among the first to shop on the retailer’s website.
When users click the notification, they see a “Shop on Site” button to purchase the item on the retailer’s website. When a user buys something through this link, they not only get some benefits in the form of a small discount, but also have a chance to be one of the first to get their hands on this product.
The company said users can also see the price, images, a description of the product, and a clickable hashtag that shows them what other buyers have to offer on Twitter.
Currently, the feature is only offered to US buyers using Twitter on English-language iOS devices. This feature will roll out to other regions later in the year if Twitter can get the necessary approvals.
