Thousands of Twitter users reported that they were having trouble accessing the site tonight down detector. According to people, the outage began just before 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time and peaked around 7:44 p.m. We had no issues on our part, but the reports continued well into the night and (as of this writing) are still ongoing for some users. Downdetector reports also indicate that most people had trouble accessing the site itself – only a fraction had trouble loading the social network through its apps.

On Christmas Eve, Musk revealed that he shut down one of Twitter’s more sensitive server racks, but the social network is still working. Musk famously bought Twitter for $44 billion in October, months after initiating the acquisition and attempting to get out of business. The company had since laid off around half the workforce and thousands of contractors, a former employee said The Washington Post in November that they knew of six critical systems that “run out of engineers.”
Isik Mater, head of research at internet monitoring service NetBlocks, said The New York Times that “the problems with Twitter occur in several countries and are widespread”. Mater also said that the “platform API, which serves both the mobile app and many aspects of the desktop site, is affected.”
