At CES 2023, Korea appeared to have the second largest startup presence after the French contingent. There was an impressive number of Korean startups in different places, and the K startup area was probably the busiest. We had the opportunity to visit it Saturday, January 7thand were able to check almost all of them.
Ubergizmo was part of the K Startup Global Media Awards Jury, and our task was to select the top 3 startups from Ubergizmo. Our rating and that of other international media would determine the final top 3 of the Global Media Awards. Overall we had 46 startups fighting for the top spot and it was one of the most dynamic groups we’ve seen.
We were asked to use a scoring system based on four key metrics: Marketability, Global Market Potential, Investment Potential and Competitiveness. The coefficients apply equally to all startups.
In our view, the top three K startups were SevenPointOne, Avalve, and Dongnam Realize Inc.
You may remember that SevenPointOne was already a top contender for MIK CES 2023, but it makes sense to have them back here as there is a product that could help everyone at some point in life.
SevenPointOne develops software that can detect early signs of dementia and cognitive impairment. This is one of the most underdiagnosed conditions in the US, and a large number of people could have better lives if they were treated sooner. We expect this area to be very competitive, but SevenPointOne already has a product.
Avalve takes food production to the next level by providing software and sensors for indoor growers who want to grow food perfectly using a constant stream of data. The company can track and analyze individual crops to help farmers optimally feed individual crops.
In this way, Avalve claims to double the yield of the crop while reducing labor by almost half. Avalve recommends using up to one camera per plant, which seems incredible. However, thanks to the falling cost of such sensors, it is cost-effective for certain crops. Avalve has an extensive plant database and continuously collects more data in its cloud platform.
#3 Dongnam Realize Inc.
Dongnam Realize Inc. offers an exciting plastic replacement that uses wood, a simple, carbon-neutral material that is available in abundance. In this way, the company makes it convenient to use this substitute in various industries. This new material requires no new tooling and comes in the same pellet form as most plastics. As such, it’s a drop-in replacement for certain plastics.
We were surprised to learn that although the material is cleanly biodegradable, it can remain in contact with water for extended periods, making it superior to many other organic substitutes that cannot withstand such contact without degrading within days.
The best way to get rid of plastic is to find better materials, and Dongnam Realize Inc brings us one step closer to that goal.
We want Thanks to all startups who took the time to prepare and deliver a pitch for our group of media juries. It was challenging to evaluate so many innovative products and companies, but ultimately we let our 17 years of experience at CES guide us.
We congratulate the top three companies with the highest aggregate scores and wish them every success in the market.
