EV-specific navigation comes to Waze. Starting today, the Maps app is introducing new data that now includes information about the location of EV chargers, which it will use to help EV drivers plan routes.
With the new app function you can specify your EV type and the corresponding charging plug, with which you can filter exactly the matching charging stations. Waze says its community will “review and update the map data in real-time to provide the most accurate and comprehensive information for the map.”
Waze’s addition of location data for EV chargers now gives EV drivers another route-planning tool. Apps like PlugShare and A Better Route Planner are both commonly used by EV drivers to find chargers, and both Apple Maps and Google Maps now also have EV routing capabilities.

And as EV drivers already know, it’s common for all but the bare-bones electric vehicles to list charging stations in their on-board navigation systems. In fact, it may be preferable to use this option rather than streaming from your phone, as many EVs prime the battery for faster charging when the native navigation app has a charger set as the destination.
Waze will start releasing EV data from today, although it says it will do so globally “in the coming weeks”.
